Qnexa is Next

The FDA is poised to approve another weight-loss drug, Qnexa. A combination of phentermine and topiramate, the drug helped study participants lose an average of 23 pounds over 2 years. They have also kept the weight off for two years.

Is it just me, or is that 23 pound loss over two years a bit underwhelming?

Oh, and let's look at the two drugs. Phentermine, the "phen" in "phen-fen", is an appetite suppressant that has common side effects such as nausea, confusion, memory loss, psychomotor disturbance, visual disturbances, URTIs, and fatigue. Great!

Topiramate, FDA approved for the treatment of migraines and epilepsy, can cause cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, heat stroke, and nervous disorders. Oh, and birth defects.

I'd much rather risk these health issues than cut Big Macs, deep-dish pizza, and monster cheesecake slices from my diet.

I almost forgot- you have to take the pill every day for the rest of your life or your appetite will return and you'll just get fat again. That is, if you survive all the side effects.

Enjoy!
