A recent study reported on Suppversity found that eating sour and/or bitter foods can help prevent cravings for sweet, salty and umami foodstuffs.
Sour and bitter foods reportedly induce production of the satiety hormone CCK.
I'm not sure this extends to gum, but I purchased some sugar-free "sour patch" gum in order to get some anecdotal evidence. Stay tuned.
