Abs, shmabs. Glutes are the new abs. After all, except for Hooter's Girls, who walks around with a bare midriff?
Strong, toned glutes provide the following benefits:
Improved posture
Injury prevention
Improved physique and
Improved strength and power
Sure, squats and lunges work the glutes to a certain degree, but they ignore the fact that we move in three planes of motion. They also don't target all the "zones" of the glutes .
Today, I'll list my top five exercises. Over the next few days, I'll explain the benefits of each.
1. Hip thrusts
2. pendulum quadraped hip extension
3. glute bridges
4. bent leg back extension
5. bent leg reverse hyper
Keep in mind that abduction/adduction, sprinting, sled pulling, etc. also contribute significantly to glute activation and strengthening. You should mix these exercises into your program as well.
I know, the hip thrust might seem a little odd, but who really cares? I'd rather look good outside the gym than in it. You want to get the most bang for your buck, right? So shut up and do it. Check out the video.
