A recent Stanford University study found that obese women who were holding a cool device while exercising were able to exercise appreciably longer than their counterparts who were holding a lukewarm device. The cold-device holders were able to cut five minutes off their 1.5 mile time, whereas the control group showed no change after 3 months. How does this work?
It is hypothesized that the more comfortable one is, the longer one is able to exercise. Cooling the hands helps cool the entire body. In addition, this cooling effect may aid with circulation. After reading a similar study several years ago, I started holding ice packs in my hands while performing cardio, and even do the same between weight lifting sets. As far as I'm concerned, placebo effect or not, this method has made me more productive. How can you try this out?
Just freeze a bottle of water and hold it while exercising. See if it works for you.
